"In this fourth eValue8 Employer Report on Diabetes, we examine health plan activities and external forces that impact management of diabetes. 2010 was a landmark year in which the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was enacted and then faced immediate legal and legislative challenges. If the law survives repeal efforts, the U.S. may soon have better health care coverage. It remains a challenge to turn health coverage into actual improved health. Poor health continues to be a major cost driver: for each American, sick or well, diabetes represents a cost of approximately $700 annually. Employers can anticipate increasing numbers of employees with diabetes. Almost 3% of people ages 20-39 have diabetes, a number that jumps to almost 11% for ages 40-59. The continually rising rate of obesity suggests that diabetes cases will continue to climb, along with other obesity-related diseases."
