- Summary
- The purpose of this phenomenological interpretive case study is to develop a thick rich description of leadership behaviors in the fundamental leadership areas of structure and consideration that will assist elementary school principals in reculturing schools. Principal leadership behaviors are defined as behaviors that lead to the ability of a principal to influence, motivate, and enable teachers to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the schools of which they are members. Case studies of three principals of schools located within a Midwest suburban school district were used to investigate the research questions. What leadership behaviors do principals demonstrate that result in being perceived by others as strong in leadership structure for reculturing schools? What leadership behaviors do principals demonstrate that result in being perceived by others as strong in leadership consideration for reculturing schools? Leadership structure describes the extent to which a leader is task oriented and directs staff work activities toward goal achievement. Leadership consideration is the extent to which a principal is sensitive to teachers, respects their ideas and feelings, and establishes mutual trust. Teacher questionnaires, focus groups, principal interviews, internal documents, and observation were utilized for data collection and analysis. Findings supported the conceptual framework and importance of a principal's need to be strong in both leadership structure and consideration. A synthesis of the research revealed four themes and skill sets necessary to be strong in consideration and structure. A principal needs to be (a) a relationship builder, (b) set clear and high expectations, (c) a collaborative leader, and (d) a responsive leader. The study also provides subsets linked to the above leadership skills and behaviors
