- Summary
- Weekly War Journal. New York City: The Battle of the Rhine has turned into a race for the bridges still standing. Only four bridges remain that the Nazis have not bombed. Two are near Cologne. The 8th and 9th Armies have captured 3000 more prisoners. General Patton's troops are in the Moselle Valley. The U.S. has been bombing Germany for the last 20 days. Russians have reached the Baltic Sea. Tokyo has been bombed again. Herbert M. Clark (Paris): The Allies now occupy most of the Rhine. The 9TH Army, the Canadians, and the British are cleaning up the remnants of the German forces in the north. 1st Army is within 3 miles of Cologne. Prime Minister MacKenzie King (Canada) predicts that the war will end before June. There may be secret agreement for a buffer federation to patrol the Rhine. William Hillman (Washington, D.C.): This is the 12th anniversary of Roosevelt taking office. He pushed for an international security organization for peace. Harold Peters (London): How long can the Germans hold out? Three to six months, according to the weather. Gordon Fraser (with the 1st Army near Cologne): 85% of Cologne has been destroyed. Comments by captured German prisoners. Edward Tomlinson (Mexico City): The Inter-American Conference is in it's 10th day. A hemispheric security organization has been established. Larry Tighe (Pacific Fleet HQ, Guam): A summary of the fighting on Iwo Jima. It was, and still is, tough. [Recording ends]
