Summary
  • Weekly war journal. [Recording already in progress.] (London): Flying fortresses and liberators attacked targets near Cologne, Germany and synthetic oil plants in central Germany. President Roosevelt and others are debating what to call the coming Allied military operation in Europe. Roosevelt prefers "liberation" rather than "invasion." A German controlled propaganda radio broadcast from Calais has been announcing names of shot-down Anglo-American airmen at the end of their broadcasts to increase their listening audience. They will discontinue doing this. Major General Heinrich Kreipe commanded a German Panzer division in Crete, until he was abducted. Now he gets the V. I. P. treatment because he's a general. (Fifth Army in Italy): The Germans are retreating, but there are heavy U. S. casualties. An eyewitness description of the fighting near Alatri, Italy. (Rio de Janeiro): U. S. relations with the other Americas are tense. Mexico may extend diplomatic recognition to the revolutionary Argentinian government. United States government has been investigating conditions in Bolivia. United States does not recognize the regime of President Edelmiro Farrell in Argentina. United States sent Avra Warren, ambassador of Panama, to La Paz to investigate the political situation. United States companies are buying tin and other minerals from Bolivia which has caused curiosity about the working conditions of Bolivia's miners. Argentina has turned against the United States. (London): Checking German claims of damage to a British city is found to be over exaggerated. [Recording ends]
  • The Churchman Award. The Churchman is the oldest religious journal in the English speaking world. Thomas J. Watson (president of I. B. M.) presents the award to Bernard M. Baruch. Mr. Baruch speaks that we are all family with an "Uncle Sam" and answers the question, why do we fight? Recording ends.]
