Summary
Weekly War Journal. New York City world headlines: Patton's forces are fighting and making advances in "The Bulge." American heavy bombers have left from Britain to attack in Germany. Moscow reports Russian Army has held Budapest. Russian Army now controls 40% of the Hungarian capitol. American military is bombing the coast of Luzon in the Philippines toward making their way to Manila. -- Paris: The spirit of purity and austerity in France is being enforced. Twenty-two luxurious night clubs have been closed that can be accessed through the black market. Additional 10% tax is added to receipts between 12:30 am and 4:00 am. -- Washington, D.C.: Congress is resisting Roosevelt's legislation for a general man-power draft at earliest possible moment. They will pass legislation for the use of the services of 4S and selective service has begun the inception of occupationally declared men who quit essential jobs without draft board approval -- London: There's been a disintegration of the Allies both politically and militarily. Hitler said in a speech that he was tired but fit. He admitted that conditions were bad but would be worse if the Allies win. Rundstedt is taking care of the Nazi military. Britain's media is recognizing Montgomery's accomplishments in the war. Britain is wary of weather and ground conditions for a counterattack, but Germany has just moved over the same territory with no trouble. German morale is at a new high. British newspapers are rallying to get "the Big Three" together. The emergence of "The Greek Problem." General Scobie has withdrawn troops and General Plastiras engaged in full civil war against EAM. There is a coal crisis in London. -- Western Front: Combat Command B of the 3rd Armored Division Commanded by Maurice Rose, is leading the front. They took about 400 prisoners last night in cold winter weather but not without many casualties. [Most inaudible.] -- Washington, D.C.: The Inter-American relations are strained ahead of the Inter-American Conference coming up in Mexico City because of Argentina's dictatorship. -- The Philippines (with MacArthur's forces in Luzon): Things are fairly quiet. It's a new year and everyone, on both sides, are hoping for the best. [Recording ends.]
