Summary
Weekly War Journal. New York City: American troops driving toward the Belfort Gap and the Siegfried Line have captured a town north of Belfort. Advances have been made around Turnhout, Belgium. Calais has fallen to the Allies. It was being defended by Canadian troops. British troops are 10 miles beyond Rimini advancing toward Bologna. Americans are in the mountains below Bologna and hope to meet up with the British troops. Russians are fighting the Germans in the streets of Warsaw, Poland. Rome: The 5th Army has smashed the Gothic Line. The Air Force is bombing behind the line. Features about the army engineers in Italy who keep the roads open and the flooding controlled. Washington, D.C.: The Russians have left Dumbarton Oaks, the Chinese have arrived. Donald Nelson has been asked by the President to take a new job. Peace is going to be as hard a job as is the war. London: The people of Dover are delighted that Calais has fallen. Now the channel can be repaired and opened to deliver supplies to the Allies in France. There are 400,000 German troops defending 500 miles of front. A British plane was acting up and the crew bailed out. Once the plane was rid of the weight, it starting flying correctly again out over the Atantic. It has a full tank of gas and a full load of bombs. American 1st Army, Belgium: German refugees have many complicated problems to navigate. Fighting is still going on in the city of Solberg. Handling the German prisoners, no-fraternization. Fighting continues in Belgium. Washington, D.C.: The president has made a final decision on the Argentine controversy of fraternizing with the Nazis. President Roosevelt says there is no division of opinion in his official family regarding Argentina and surrounding countries. He refutiates the assumption that Sumner Welles and not Cordell Hull spoke the president's mind in the matter about our Latin American foreign policy and out policy toward Argentina in particular. United States opposing Nazism in Argentina has set a conflict between Churchill and Roosevelt. MacArthur's headquarters in New Guinea: The Pacific war is now a full-scale war. Most Americans think the Pacific battle is akin to a second string football game. United States citizens feel that once Germany is defeated, that the war will be over, but the journalist states that, until Japan is defeated, the war will not be over. [Recording ends]
