Summary
Sedentary behavior and obesity are highest among underserved communities with predominantly low-income and minority populations. These communities often have low walkability resultant of high-speed, high-volume streets and an outdated built environment. While many studies focus on the benefits of parks to promote physical activity and recognize the importance of access, few have analyzed the impact of pedestrian crossing behaviors to these parks in relation to physical activity. This study will determine the impact of the built environment upon physical activity levels in a low-income minority neighborhood park. Specific objectives of this study are: (1) to examine the pedestrian crossing behaviors and safe access before and after the intervention (2) to examine park-based behaviors in the neighborhood park before and after the intervention in terms of both counts and average energy expenditure. An infrastructure project in Columbia, MO provided a natural setting to examine the effect of a new pedestrian-friendly crosswalk linking low-income housing with a public park. The findings of this study suggest that the installation of a signalized crosswalk promoted safe-crossing behaviors and calmed traffic at the intervention site. However, findings revealed few increases in either park use or park-based physical activity and while several factors may be impacting these results, there is need for further investigation
