Free-volume properties have been investigated primarily by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy for the polymer blends of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC)/tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate (TMPC), tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate/polystyrene (PS), bisphenol-A polycarbonate/ polystyrene, bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) in this dissertation. The variations of the free-volume properties in these polymer blends in terms of the free-volume hole size, fraction, and distribution are found with respect to miscibility, temperature, and phase separation. For miscible blends with a lower critical temperature (tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate/polystyrene, bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether), the free-volume is found to contract upon mixing are found. However, this free-volume contraction is not observed for bisphenol-A polycarbonate/tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate blends, which are miscible at high temperature. According to our positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy results, the behavior of the free-volume properties of immiscible bisphenol-A polycarbonate/polystyrene blends is more complicated than those of miscible blends. The mean fractional free volume of bisphenol-A polycarbonate/polystyrene blends exhibits both negative and positive deviations from linearity. Moreover, the free-volume distribution is related to the miscibility of the polymer blends. A broader free-volume distribution is shown for immiscible bisphenol-A polycarbonate/polystyrene blends. A temperature dependence study of free-volume properties was performed for the bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (50/50) blend. The variations of the free-volume properties of the bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (50/50) blend with temperature are similar to those of pure bisphenol-A polycarbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate) polymers. In addition, a comparison of the obtained free-volume properties with the theoretical results of the Simha-Somcynsky free-volume theory is made. A general agreement is obtained regarding the changes of the mean value and distribution of the fractional free volume with temperature. Free-volume properties during phase separation have also been studied for bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) blends. It is shown that the mean values of free-volume size and fraction increase rapidly in the early stage of phase separation, and then reach a plateau as phase separation continues. Furthermore, the free-volume distribution in the phase-separating blend broadens immediately after phase separation begins. However, no further significant change in the width of the distribution is observed as phase separation progresses
