- Summary
- Close-ups of the news. There is no beef available to purchase in San Francisco. Japan is between survival and death. MacArthur's troops have landed on two more islets. Heading toward Baguio, Philippines to free American prisoners. MacArthur may paratroop onto Clark Field. Stalin reports his troops are 60 miles from Königsberg, East Prussia while Germany reports Stalin's troops are 28 miles from Breslau, Silesia. Western Front: German push there is easing. There exists a theory that Germany would rather surrender to Russia than to the Western allies. Russians are hammer in Europe, Western allies are the anvil. The United States are the hammer in Pacific while the Chinese are the anvil. Burma: Anglo-Indians are doing some hammering too. Upton is concerned that the Big 3 are more concerned with might than right referring to dividing up the world between only three men. He is concerned with Russian communist political influence of Stalin in the United States. A speech was given in support of communism by Sidney Hillman at a banquet in California. Hillman wants more political power of the Congress of Industrial Organizations - Political Action Committee (PAC). Upton feels this organization is opposed to democracy. He gives more editorial examples throughout the United States of the might-makes-right philosophy instead of always doing right. He is against Churchill's unconditional surrender instead of surrender on the basis of the principals of the defeating forces. Makes references to: Governor Arthur B. Langlie; the Constitution declares that only Congress can make war and declare peace; $45,000,000 to rent airfields in India; Tacoma newspaper says, "Victory won't bring freedom, safety, or democracy;" the study "What are our war aims" by Marvin K. Hart; Upton believes peace must be founded on 1. establishing the security of the United States, 2. preservation of representative government in the United States, 3. world peace founded on justice as well as might
