Summary
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of narcissism to depression and drug use in adolescents, as postulated by Kohut in his psychodynamic theory of self psychology. A fundamental assumption of Kohut is that narcissism is essential and necessary for psychological existence and well being. Primary narcissism of infancy is transformed gradually into mature and adult form of narcissism manifested in healthy adult ambitions and ideals. Interference with meeting the narcissistic needs during the developmental stages may lead to formation of narcissistic injuries in the form of either mirroring narcissism, or idealizing narcissism. Kohut's theoretical conjecture that both depression and drug use among adolescents are symptoms of adolescent narcissism (arising from either unmet mirroring needs, or unmet idealizing needs) was the focus of this study. A total of 250 junior and senior high school students from three high schools in St. Joseph, Missouri voluntarily participated in this study. They were administered two narcissism scales Pseudoautonomy and Peer-Group Dependence (Lapan & Patton, 1986), Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1993), and Michigan Alcohol and Other Drugs School Survey (Johnston, 1989). Data were analyzed using Simple Correlations, Multiple Regression, Hierarchical Regression, and Logistic Hierarchical Regression Analyses. Results indicated that narcissism in addition to being significantly correlated to depression and drug use in adolescents is a powerful predictor of the level of both depression and drug use among adolescents. It was also found that depression is significantly correlated to drug use by adolescents. The findings also pointed to mirroring narcissism as a more powerful predictor than idealizing narcissism, and unaffected by the level of depression. The usefulness of early assessment of narcissism for purposes of education, prevention, and treatment was discussed. Attention was focused on the importance and impact of the findings in terms of training programs for teachers and counselors. Suggestions for further research were offered
