- Summary
- Meet the press. [Recording already in progress]. The questions he answers are: The Russians are fearful that the proposed United Nations military forces may develop into the nucleus of a military alliance of the western powers directed against the Soviet Union. Do you feel there is any justification for such fears? Would you be prepared to accept a Soviet military leader as say the first commander of the United Nations armed force to preserve peace? Do you think the fears that Mr. Smith talked about, the fears that he says the Russians have, do you think that they are actually there are do you think maybe they are phony news set by the Russians [inaudible]? Do you see any danger of a United Nations police force might itself become an aggressive and a militant organization that's hard to control? Do you think there is any danger that the United Nations military force is going to form? You've been in [inaudible] for some months now, haven't you? Has anything happened yet of any importance? They believe the United States is the only power in the world capable of enforcing peace and the Western way of life. Do you share that view? Do you think the United States is doing anything to maintain that military posture? Are they doing enough? Do you mean the United States has got to go around protecting the world against itself for an indefinite period? How about Germany? The German doctrine, as such, will they be able to keep Germany from going Communist? Is it enough for this country against foreign propaganda in its foreign broadcasts and in its news broadcasts; is it enough for the United States to sell the American way of life to people who simply can't understand that such a way of life can exist considering their own living conditions? Do you think that the Russians are really interested in the formation of the United Nations military force to stop aggression? Do you think it's possible to reconcile a hard peace with the concept of establishing a democratic [inaudible] in Germany? Is it not a fact that Germany is going to made economically strong again by both Russian and the West irrespective of whether we get an agreement on the settlement of the German problem or not? We've been working for a unified government of Germany. Supposing we did get a unified government. Presumably the communists would be an essential and a large part of that government. Would the usual tactics of pushing and shoving and force at the right moment; wouldn't such a unified government become a communist government before long? Did I understand you to say... that you didn't believe a formation of a military force to stop aggression? Why are continued an action that seems to be useless to date? In meantime aren't they gobbling up an awful lot of Europe while this debate goes on and no force is formed? [Next question inaudible.] With the forces divided, the United States on the one side and Russian on the other, and no action taken, won't Germany revert to nationalism? If we had a United Nations military force, will that force be used to stop the kind of aggression that the Russian are now guilty of? So the Russians can keep on gobbling up Europe while we continue talking. How long are we going to continue to talk? Will we continue to talk until we're ready to act? Aren't we acting under the Truman doctrine? Top military officials feel that war with Russia is inevitable. Are you one of those that shares that point of view? [Recording ends]
