Summary
The general purpose of this study was to write a descriptive account of the life of Paul Creston, and of his work as a composer and theorist, and to provide access to a wide range of materials by and about his work. The specific objectives involved were: 1) to present a biographical sketch of his life; 2) to present an overview of his theoretical writings; 3) to present an overview of his rhythmic, formal, melodic harmonic and scoring techniques in his music; and 4) to provide an annotated bibliography of his works. Research data was obtained from a personal interview, manuscripts and scrapbooks, and published documents. The majority of these materials were from collections located at the Library of Congress, The New York Public Library and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Findings indicate the Paul Creston's life as a composer and teacher adhered to a set of fundamental and metaphysical principles first espoused by him in 1932. In addition, Paul Creston was an autodidact; his attainments in theory and composition were accomplished without formal training. He forged no new developments in twentieth century rhythmic practice. Nevertheless, his systematic clarification and codification of his rhythmic practices makes his ideas easily accessible to students and composers. He neither founded a new school of composition nor impacted accepted musical structure, but remained a conservative with a reverence for the past. He established a place for himself in American music by the 1940s, and composed over one hundred works, being widely performed and recorded by soloists and ensembles throughout the world. The range and scope of materials about Creston reveal a man whose work contributed to the growth and continuation of an American music tradition from which succeeding generations of musicians can build. While there is no way to predict how Creston will be viewed in the future, it is likely that he will be remembered as a composer who wrote with integrity and sincerity of purpose
