Deprivation from nicotine has been shown to affect executive cognitive functioning in smokers causing an inability to maintain cognitive control over their behavior, which may be directly linked to smoking relapse. Past research regarding response inhibition in abstinent smokers has generally shown that abstinence from nicotine reduces participants' ability to inhibit their responses because of decreased executive cognitive functioning. According to the incentive sensitization model, drug cues that have become associated with an addictive drug are highly salient and grab ahold of the users' selective attention. The present study seeks to evaluate a novel method of assessing smokers' cognitive control in order to predict smokers' susceptibility to nicotine cues and relapse. MouseTracker measures hand-motion motor dynamics, demonstrating the moment-to-moment time course of decision-making in real time. MouseTracker had not yet been used to measure the moment-to-moment decision making of nicotine addiction. Consistent with previous research, our results indicate that nicotine addiction is responsible for cognitive-control impairments when participants were deprived of nicotine. The implications of the current findings are discussed in the context of a better understanding of nicotine addiction's effect on cognitive control and the development of a novel paradigm for predicting nicotine relapse
