Summary
  • [Recording already in progress.] Bing announces that Bob Hope is going out of the country on a visit to military troops overseas. The movie, The Road to Utopia, is to open while he's traveling. Bob Hope's book, "I Never Left Home," will be released today (June 15, 1944). Bing and Bob banter about the book. Ken Carpenter has taken a job at a grocer. Bing asks women to take war jobs and to keep their grocers in mind
  • Weekly war journal. (New York headline news): United States troops have cut off the port of Cherbourg from mainland Normandy. The forces have arrived at the town of Barneville. Fifteen thousand German prisoners have been taken since the invasion began. Thirteen hundred United States heavy bombers have bombed oil refineries and airports in Holland and Germany. RAF night bombers have also been at work. United States troops have moved five miles beyond the Grosseto, Italy on the west coast. United States has made progress on Saipan. (Cairo, Egypt): The British ambassador made an unprecedented visit to the head of the Turkish state, Prime Minister Şükrü Saracoğlu. The Turkish Foreign Minister, Numan Menemencioğlu, abruptly resigned. Prime Minister Saracoğlu found that the naval ship, Kassel, was actually carrying munitions for the Germans through the strait from the Black Sea into the Aegean Sea. The Royal Navy and RAF had cut off most supplies to the Nazis on Crete. How the invasion influences events in the Middle East. (Washington, D. C.): President Roosevelt will present a peace plan. It calls for an association national government to exercise their own sovereignty by cooperation. Permanent seats on a council of nations are proposed for the United States, Great Britain, Russia, and China. Praise for Donald Nelson, war production chief, on planning a transition from a world at war and a world in peace. He is advancing post-war planning. He has given industries the permission to start changing over production to the needs of civilians. (London): The Cherbourg peninsula has been cut off from the Germans by the British and Canadian troops under the command of Montgomery from the east and the United States troops from the west. (Normandy beachhead, France): Reports of reflections of troops following the invasion of Normandy. (Fifth Army in Rome, Italy): Memories of the Italian campaign from Gordon Fraser. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the last time): Brazil has been a good ally. Brazilian troops have been strategic in bombing German submarines and U-boats, and escorting allied ship convoys. Warships are being built in Brazil. The Brazilian army is one of the largest in the Americas and is ready to fight overseas. Brazil has participated in the United States lend-lease program. Brazil is the only allied country that has liquidated all axis (German, Italian, and Japanese) properties and assets. Brazil miners and defense plant workers cannot strike during wartime. There are long lines for the rationed products, especially meat and milk. [Recording ends]
