Summary
Primarily known for his urban genre paintings of New York in the early twentieth century, John French Sloan completed a pioneering collection of politically charged illustrations for the socialist weekly the Coming Nation. Precursors to his well known work for The Masses, these illustrations represent his first attempt to embrace socialist principles and establish himself as a political artist. This study will explore the development of Sloan's political beliefs and how he placed his artistic talents in the service of Socialism. Focusing on his illustrative works for the Coming Nation, the investigation will trace the path of artistic growth, and ultimately, Sloan's creative impact on radical publications in America
