- Summary
- The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of training in Motivational Literacy Intervention Strategies (MLIS), i.e. literacy strategies + cross-age tutoring + scaffolding, on 4th grade students' desire to act as positive literacy influences as well as on their influential literacy behaviors. Through the use of MLIS, elementary children may become a resource to enhance the experiential and language base of other children. Subjects for this study were members of four 4th grade classrooms and four kindergarten classrooms in a midwestern suburban elementary school. Analysis of the data showed a slight, although not statistically significant, increase in desire to be positive literacy influences among 4th grade high readers who learned and practiced the MLIS through cross-age tutoring and among low readers who learned and practiced the MLIS through cross-age tutoring and received scaffolded support. Analysis of the data showed no significant increase in influential behaviors as a result of the use of MLIS. Analysis also showed slight, although not statistically significant, improvement in some of the literacy skills among tutored kindergartners. These findings indicated that some 4th graders' desire to be positive literacy influences can be increased using all or parts of the MLIS, depending on the individual student's reading ability. The findings from the influential behaviors assessment indicate a need to develop more sensitive assessment tools and to implement the experiment and assessment during a different part of the school year
