Summary
Beowulf Triptych is an original composition in which the monsters of the epic poem "Beowulf," and battles that ensue, are characterized musically. Grendel, the first creature Beowulf is summoned to slay, is a horrible beast of tremendous strength that terrorizes the countryside at night. Tonally centered around G, the main body of the movement is an off-kilter dance of death in 7/8. The other portions create a bizarre musical world through the use of exotic percussion. The Tarn-hag is Grendel's mother and Beowulf journeys underwater to confront her. The music is written in waves of lush chords that ebb and flow. The harmonies become denser and the rhythms more active as Beowulf descends. The Fire Dragon is Beowulf's final foe. A set of variations is presented on an additive palindromic theme. The relationships of fourth, tritones, and fifths are explored, characterizing the unpredictability of fire
